MOST GUYS TREAT WORKING OUT much as they do calling Mom. It’s a good thing to do regularly, but skipping it once in a while isn’t going to cause irreparable harm. If, on a Thursday night after a 10-hour slog at the office, you have a choice between putting on your sneakers or ordering takeout from that new panini place, who’s going to blame you for selecting the activity that doesn’t involve sweaty socks?

But a growing number of guys, it seems, think that missing one day of exercise, or even cutting short a workout, will suddenly make them frail or—far worse—fat. Among their ranks is the guy who can’t sleep nights because he’s too amped-up about the training he’s going to do at 5 a.m. If his trip to the gym isn’t up to snuff, he’ll log another in the evening, making excuses to blow off work or a date. And then there’s the guy who feels compelled to ride the stationary bike until he has burned off every last calorie from lunch (“You’re paying the price for that slice of pizza,” he tells himself). Marc Jacobs’ Grooming Regimen

WHEN MARC JACOBS decided to improve his diet and exercise regimen three years ago, he also amped up his approach to grooming. The designer began getting regular facials, massages, manicures, and pedicures and now uses no fewer than five skin-care products a day. To finish, he applies Bang, his first new men’s fragrance in nearly a decade. “I was the antithesis of all of this,” the 47-year-old says of his newfound narcissism. “I just had no interest at all. And then it was, like, anything that makes me feel good I wanted more of. Taking care of myself makes me feel good.” Here are the highlights of his routine.

THE GATES TO LILITH FAIR in Seattle don’t open for another hour or so, but thousands of women are already lined up outside The Gorge Amphitheater. In bikini tops and cargo shorts or braless in floor-length sundresses, the festival-goers gathered for the Sarah McLachlan-led summer tour that celebrates female musicians call to each other as they head inside. A girl in a white slip dress trailing her friends across the parking lot yells, “Do I look cute right now?” Another leading her crew to the line shouts, “All my ladies say, ‘Oh!’”

Gym Mixes Vodka With Fitness

“SWEAT and alcohol are both great social lubricants,” said David Barton, founder of the David Barton Gym. So in a move that might seem silly or inevitable, depending on your point of view, he has combined them.

The gym chain became a watering hole at its locations in Chicago, Miami and New York when it started hosting cocktail hours after its intense boot camp training classes.

They are sponsored by the Swedish vodka brand Svedka throughout August and are meant to tie in with the brand’s “RU Bot Or Not?” ad campaign that features a female robot with proportions Barbie would envy.

“I want people to find the gym not just a place to work out, but a good hang as well,” Mr. Barton said. Keep reading.

Polish One Off While They Polish Your Nails

IT was nearly 6 p.m. on Friday, an hour when many New Yorkers need a drink, and Sera Chi, the owner of the Dashing Diva nail salon on the Upper West Side, was greeting her regulars. “It’ll be about 45 minutes for a manicure,” she told them, “but you can have a Cosmo now.”

Soon about 20 women were sipping pink drinks while choosing polish colors and waiting to be led to the manicure and pedicure stations. There, about 15 more women were having their nails clipped, filed and painted, their martini glasses balanced on any available surface: on top of nail-drying ovens, on the armrests of pedicure chairs.

Cocktail night at the nail salon has become a popular tradition around the city, a time when shop owners can serve drinks (sometimes legally), knowing that their patrons are unlikely to be driving home.
